Lectio Divina for The Second in Ordinary Time
Read the following Scripture two or three times:
John 1:29-34
John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “ Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away
the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me
because he existed before me.’ I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was
that he might be made known to Israel.” John testified further, saying, “I saw the spirit come down like a dove from heaven and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with
water told me, ‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize
with the Holy Spirit.’ Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.
Meditation
After the reading, take some time to reflect in silence on or more of the following questions:
– What word or words in this passage caught your attention?
– What in this passage comforted you?
– What in this passage challenged you?
Contemplation
Read the Scripture again, followed by this reflection:
What conversion of mind, heart, and life is the Lord asking of me?
John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him. When have I encountered Christ? How can I become more aware of God’s presence in those I meet, especially those in need?
I did not know him. When have I felt far from God? How can I grow in my knowledge of and love for God?
Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God. When have I testified to God’s actions in my life? How can I become more comfortable sharing my faith?
After a period of silent reflection recite the Lord’s Prayer.
Living the Word This Week
